Waltzing Matilda.

Australia's Other National Anthem.

Waltzing Matilda was written by Australia's most famous poet Andrew Barton (Banjo) Paterson in 1895. He heard a tune played by Miss Christina MacPherson of Dagworth Station. He added the words of Waltzing Matilda to the music.
The song was later performed in public and is famous throughout the world.

It is known as Australia's second national anthem and I believe, was used as such, at the Olympic Games in Montreal Canada in 1976.
Experts disagree on who wrote the music but most believe that it's an arrangement by Thomas Bulch of an old Scottish tune called "Craigielea". Maybe their is some truth in that, because
as a boy at school in Scotland in the 1940's, we were taught Waltzing Matilda in music class.

Waltzing Matilda
As it is sung today.

This is the version of the song I was taught at school.

Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong
Under the shade of a coolibah tree
And he sang as he watched and waited 'til his billy boiled
Who'll come a waltzing matilda with me.

Waltzing matilda, waltzing matilda
Who'll come a waltzing matilda with me
And he sang as he watched and waited 'til his billy boiled
Who'll come a waltzing matilda with me.

Down came a jumbuck to drink at the billabong
Up jumped the swagman and grabbed him with glee
And he sang as he shoved that jumbuck in his tucker-bag
Who'll come a waltzing matilda with me.

Waltzing matilda, waltzing matilda
Who'll come a waltzing matilda with me
And he sang as he watched and waited 'til his billy boiled
Who'll come a waltzing matilda with me.

Up rode the squatter mounted on his thoroughbred
Down came the troopers, one, two, three,
Whose that jolly jumbuck you've got in your tucker bag
You'll come a waltzing matilda with me.

Waltzing matilda, waltzing matilda
Who'll come a waltzing matilda with me
And he sang as he watched and waited 'til his billy boiled
Who'll come a waltzing matilda with me.

Up jumped the swagman and sprang into the billabong
You'll never catch me alive, said he
And his ghost may be heard as you pass by that billabong
You'll come a waltzing matilda with me.

Waltzing matilda, waltzing matilda
You'll come a waltzing matilda with me
And he sang as he watched and waited 'til his billy boiled
You'll come a-waltzing matilda with me.

The Original Waltzing Matilda

 First Version

Oh, there once was a swagman camped in the billabong
Under the shade of a coolibah tree
And he sang as he looked at the old billy boiling
Who'll come a waltzing Matilda with me.

Who'll come a-waltzing Matilda my darling
Who'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me
Waltzing Matilda and leading a waterbag
Who'll come a waltzing Matilda with me.

Down came the jumbuck to drink at the water hole
Up jumped the swagman and grabbed him with glee
And he sang as he put him away in his tucker bag
You'll come a waltzing Matilda with me.

Up came the Squatter a-ridding his thoroughbred,
Up came Policemen  one, two and three
Whose is that jumbuck you've got in the tucker bag
You'll come a waltzing Matilda with me.

The swagman he up and he jumped in the water-hole
Drowning himself by the coolibah tree
And his ghost may be heard as it sings by the billabong
Who'll come a waltzing Matilda with me.

Did you know that the national anthem of Australia.
"Advance Australia Fair" was composed before Waltzing Matilda, by a Scotsman originating from Port Glasgow named Peter McCormick. It's first public performance is thought to have been given in Sydney on November 30th (St Andrew's Day), 1878 at the St Andrew's Day concert of the Highland Society. The singer was a Mr. Andrew Fairfax.
Personally I prefer "Waltzing Matilda"

Thanks to Kathy from Oz. I have learned so much about the song and loads of other things about Australia.
